How can I get my Wii remote (that came with the console) to sync so that I may access the home screen?

I turn on the Wii, but my Wii remote will not sync to the system. I have two remotes, but neither will sync. I've tried unplugging everything and re-starting the Wii, and I even tried changing the batteries in the Wii remote.
