My rabbit needs an attitude adjustment?

Rabbits are prey animals. You likely caused him too much stress by the struggle and thus he pooped everywhere. You just need to make putting him in his cage a swift and eventless process. If his door isn't big enough this can be a problem. Instead of putting him in face forward, hold him securely and put him in rear first. Don't snuggle him up to your neck either. That's just asking for it. Rabbits don't like to be held like human babies.
