What are the views of your religion on using animals as subjects in studies?

I'm very curious, where does your religion stand on using animals as participants in studies? Especially those that cause harm to the animals in hopes of providing better care to humans. Please share your thoughts! I've always wondered what role religion plays in ethical debates on this subject. Is your religion OK with the use of millions of animals a year for an ever expanding science field?
